Hello everyone, my name is Nicole and I love to garden and cook
for fun. My hobbies play a large role in my life and are the driving force behind my career choices. I currently work in the Publix bakery and love my job. I choose to get an Interdisciplinary degree in the subjects of Health and Humanities with minor in Psychology. My curriculum has really helped me be able to understand all aspects of diet and nutrition and how they are represented to the public in the form of marketing. I would like to eventually work with the Publix Organic brands establishing better ways to make organics available to everyone. The Psychology and Humanities portion of my degree has helped me to better understand people’s wants and how to provide it in the most appealing way possible. Health, of course has
helped me greatly in understanding diet and its vast affects on our health. How about you? What are your interests and hobbies? Do they play a role in your decision to pursue interdisciplinary studies? I found it helpful to complete the Myers-Brigg test to find out more about my personality and occupational interests. I am an INFJ, what are you?

When people ask me about my degree I explain to them that it is a custom made program that incorporates all of my interests and needs. This was important to me because I wanted
something that was not available in a regular degree program. So much of the world today is a melting pot of disciplines, to pick just one to study is difficult. Why was choosing interdisciplinary studies the answer for you?
This degree has both advantages and disadvantages. For me the obvious advantage was being able to incorporate the study of more than one subject to become a more rounded
individual. The disadvantage is that the interdisciplinary approach to careers and education is still fairly new and not completely understood by many people.
This can make it a little challenging to explain my education and career
choice to some people. What advantages and disadvantages do you see in choosing this as a course of study?
Nicole Williams
Hello, my name is Katina Bolton and I am excited about being a
mentor this semester. I hope I can be of great assistance to you, our
cornerstone group, as you all enter into the world of Interdisciplinary
studies. I know my mentors helped me a great deal when I was in cornerstone.
Let me tell you a little about myself and how I arrived at IDS. I am 39, I will
graduate before I am 40, yay!! I am a married mother of 2 boys, ages 12 and 14.
My life has taken me in many different directions, I have been an EMT, a
Personal Trainer and up until March of last year I was going to be a teacher. I
was in the Early Childhood Education program here at UCF and I decided that
since I have 155 credit hours (167 after this term) I really should utilize as
many as possible, that is when I found IDS. I thought it was a perfect fit for
me to integrate all of my credits and knowledge form so many classes. What my family and I like to do for fun is we love to fish, hunt, to go off-road, bowl, play Wii and now XBOX Kinects, I am so in love with the games on the Kinects. I love being active and I will be the first to admit I have a very limited attention span. I have had to train myself to not get up in the middle
of a timed online exam to go clean the kitchen ;). My areas of study are Health Science,
Behavioral/Social Science and my minor is Education. I hope to one day reopen my personal training company with a focus on our youth, especially the under privileged who may not
have the same opportunities as those from higher socioeconomic class to benefit
from an exercise program and a healthy diet.
The advantages of IDS would be the ability to utilize more skills
and not be locked into only one mindset or world view. The disadvantages are
having to defend the idea of IDS to family members and friends. How I explain
IDS to others is I basically tell them that it is a way to expand beyond just
one discipline to make myself more marketable. So, instead of just being able
to be employed as a teacher in K-3, I become employed in the health field, as
well as fields associated with social and behavioral health. I would love to
help children with health and nutrition as well as emotional and social
wellness.
I am looking forward to a rewarding final semester here at UCF and
I am glad to have you all as part of it.
Good luck,
Katina Bolton
Hello my name is Claudia Perez. I am
excited because this is my last
semester at UCF. I am looking forward
to working with my fellow classmates in this
mentoring project as well as you in
the Cornerstone class. The last three and half years
have flown by so fast. You will see
that it will fly for you also. It is worth the journey! I
remember my Cornerstone class and how
overwhelmed I felt. I had received my AA
degree from UCF in 1987. After 21
years of not being in school I decided (after much
prayer) that I would take the
challenge and return to school and complete my bachelor's
degree. Originally, in 1987, my major
was Foreign Language Combination - French and
Spanish. As I started to research my
choices in 2008 for a major the best choice for me
was Interdisciplinary Studies. I was
able to use my credits in Foreign Language as one of
my areas and then I chose to take my
new classes to complete my second area in Health.
I chose Sociology as my minor. I had
never taken any sociology classes but am surprised
to say that the courses that I
completed in this minor have been the most interesting and
enlightening. Last year I decided to
use some of my Health credits towards a second
minor in Health Sciences. I also
learned so much in these courses. IDS allowed me to
expand my interest and knowledge in
new areas.
• Usually what I do for fun includes
my husband and five children. We love to travel and
try to take a trip somewhere each
year. We spent Christmas and New Year's in
Snowshoe , West Virginia, Asheville,
North Carolina and Gatlinburg, Tennessee. I love
to teach and have been homeschooling my
children since 1996. My oldest is in college
now. I also enjoy scrapbooking and
reading.
• I keep asking myself what I don't
understand about my major-IDS? Well, I am relieved
that Capstone's purpose is to bring
all the parts and pieces together in our minds so that it
will make more sense and will allow us
to explain it to others. I have a sense of how my
areas should work together but for the
last three years I have tackled each area separately.
Now I have to bring them together and
be able to present them as a compete package. I
tried to explain IDS to my uncle a few
months ago and he was not understanding my
explanation. I told him that it means
that I chose areas that I had a strong interest and then
would use them to find a career that
would incorporate them all.
• The advantages that I see in an IDS
education are the ability use your interests and talents
in the areas that you enjoy. You have
a more well rounded approach to tackling real life
situations that will incorporate your
broad knowledge base and you have more choices in
career opportunities as they arise.
You will each discover what these areas of strength
and competence in your college career.
It makes it exciting and rewarding. The greatest
disadvantage is probably the lack of
understanding in the general public of what
Interdisciplinary Studies is and how
much it can offer to those who are willing to give a
chance.
• Be challenged and enjoy your road of discovery! Take care, Claudia
Hello. My name is Kris. I'm 23 years old. I like to
read, watch movies, and spend time with my family and friends. My disciplines
for this major are Health Sciences and Social/Behavioral Sciences. My minor is
in leadership studies. My biggest advantage with this Major is all the
information I’ve learned...my disadvantage is where I’m going to apply it all
at! I became an IDS major because the major I had before this (communication
sciences and disorders) wasn’t for me. Instead of picking an entire new 2 year
program I came across this one and I've had no regrets.
Kris Pena
Hi my name is Megan, and
I’m excited that this is my last semester at UCF. I’ve had a great experience
but I’m ready to graduate! I’m from a small little island that has a fishing
problem and I’m currently finishing my capstone class back at home. I enjoy any
outdoor actives, such as biking, kayaking, fishing, boating etc. When I first
started at UCF my intend degree was Physical Therapy but I soon realized that I
didn’t want to be in school for all the years it called for. Luckily, I had
just enough Health Science classes so I was able to complete a minor. I’m so
happy that I learned about IDS because I absolutely love it! I love the idea of
being able to study more than just one area and not having to be in school
longer. When I describe IDS to my family and friends, I describe it as a degree
that allows me to focus and learn about more than just one area in particular.
I was able to change all my areas and turn them into minors, which I feel fit
my personality perfectly; Health Science, Education, and Hospitality. I like
helping people, I love working with kids, and I enjoy meeting new people. I’m
so glad that I learned about IDS and chose it as my degree; I wouldn’t have it
any other way! I look forward to being a mentor this semester and I’m excited
to be able to say that I’m a soon to be UCF Alumni, go Knights!
Best of luck to everyone,
Megan Sebastian
Hi there and welcome to the blog! My name is Rochele Medrozo, and I am 22 years
old. I am so glad to have spent the last three and half years here at UCF, but
I am very much looking forward to move onto my post-graduate life! Aside from
school, I enjoy drawing, playing guitar and running.
As a freshman, I knew I wanted to go into a profession that allowed me to help
and interact with others. Coming from a Filipino family, it seemed only natural
to consider nursing, but I knew that it was not for me. However, I spent half
of my college years as a Pre-clinical Allied Health Sciences major, but
uncertain of what I would do after graduation. I then discovered the career of
Occupational therapy and decided to pursue it. I switched over to
Interdisciplinary Studies so that I can tailor my degree so that it better
prepared me for graduate school (and eventually a career as an O.T.). My areas
are in Health Sciences and Education, and my minor is in Studio Art.
I wish you all the best of luck this semester, and I hope you have an amazing
experience in your IDS journey!

My name is Amanda and I am 22. This is actually my 5th year at UCF so I am
especially excited to be graduating soon. I like going to the beach, reading,
and spending time with my friends and family. I really like the fact that my
two areas of study can go hand in hand. I am focusing on health sciences and
social/behavioral sciences with a minor in education. When I explain IDS to
others, I tell them my story in a nutshell. I couldn't find one major that
suited and interested me, so IDS allows me to combine my interests. I think the
advantages to IDS education is that it allows students to not be in a box with
just one area of focus. It provides a broader more varied educational
experience. I think one disadvantage could be job placement in the future.
Depending on the position, they may be looking for someone with a more
specialized degree. As I mentioned before, I searched and searched for a good
fit and really couldn't find it. I changed my major several times and finally
found IDS. It is perfect because I can combine my interests into one.
Best of luck to everyone!
Amanda Hofer
Hi everyone my name is Cristie Vargas and I am 23 years old. I am so excited to be
apart of this mentoring group, I thought it was really helpful to be able to
talk to capstone students when I was in cornerstone! My hobbies are camping and
couponing! I absolutely love doing both! I volunteer as a counselor for a
camping youth group at my church called Pathfinders. Over the past couple years
we really have been blessed to be able to camp all over the state of Florida
and have had special trips to Georgia and South Carolina as well. Latest
obsession of couponing I picked up like many others from watching the
television series "Extreme Couponing." I have been doing it for nine
months now and its really rewarding and addicting! Like many of you I'm sure
have already encountered explaining IDS can be a little tricky. We are not a
concrete major where we all are walking away with the same specific education
like accounting majors. I always tell people that IDS is a very tailored
education to the different subjects I was interested in. To which I always get
the follow up question "What can you do with that?" my answer is I
essentially have formal education in three different subjects and my
possibilities are endless. The advantage of an interdisciplinary education is
that we are gaining so much knowledge. Most students only study two subjects at
most three if they are double minors or majors, we at minimum study three
subjects. A disadvantage an interdisciplinary education has is that nobody know
what interdisciplinary is which is why explaining your major and knowing what
you want to do as far as career goes is so important. When I decided to become
an IDS major I was at a real crossroads in my education journey. I had been at
a state college getting my A.A. for four years and I felt really stuck. A
friend of mine had just started the IDS program at UCF after she explained it
to me it peaked my interest and I started to look into it and decided that this
program was the right fit for me. As we have all mentioned we are beyond
excited to be in our last semester at UCF! It has been an incredible journey
and get ready cause yours is just starting! I cannot wait to hear from all of
you as the semester continues good luck!

Hello. My name is Lorri Cowart and I am a 50 year old single mom and college student. I love school and feel it is probably the single best thing I have ever done for myself. I enjoy learning new things and at this point in my life I need to do something different to make sure my life is all I want out of it because I feel like you make your own destiny by the choices you make in life. I like the medical field and my IDS majors are Behavioral and Social Science and Life/Biomedical Science with Health as my minor.
ReplyDeleteMy personality test showed the following:'
ENFJ as my type.
extraverted 22 %
intuitive 38 %
feeling 62 %
judging 56 %
I am:
slightly expressed extravert
moderately expressed intuitive personality
distinctively expressed feeling personality
moderately expressed judging personality
I like people. I get along well with just about everyone I meet. I usually have pretty good intuition about people and some certain situations. I am usually pretty open about my feelings and I try not to be judgemental of others but to judge based on facts and not always assumptions.
What I would like to do when I am finished with my schooling is do virtual work or something that I can do no matter where I live. I have a fiance in England and I would like to relocate there once I have completed my schooling but I want to be able to work doing something that will facilitate that part of my goal as well as doing something rewarding and meaningful in my life as far as career goals for my future.
I am excited to be part of the Cornerstone class and I look forward to all the insight and help that the Capstone mentors can provide. I think this is going to be a rewarding experience for myself and hopefully for everyone else as well.
Lorri Cowart
Hey Lorri!
DeleteMy cousin actually just got married to her fiance who lived in England! What a coincidence!
I am also an ENFJ :)
I like how you want your career to be rewarding and meaningful to you. I am an aspiring orthodontist and I hope that career choice will be rewarding and meaningful to me. I think that is the most important part of a career!
Good luck in your studies,
Charlotte Haught
Hey Charlotte! How are you?
DeleteIt is great that your cousin got to marry her fiance, I hope I will do that some day too but for now I am just happy to have a remarkable and supportive man in my corner. He is the best!!
I love the medical field so I can not imagine having a career that would not be rewarding as well as meaningful. Helping people is a great thing no matter how you accomplish that goal.
I like smiling too and I think orthodontics will be a fun thing for you!! Making all those young peoples smiles look like a million bucks will certainly keep a smile on your face I am certain of that.
Well good luck to you as well and hopefully we will all learn something from each other. At least I hope that we can!!!! So many smart minds in here it would be a sin not to!!!! lol!
Lorri Cowart
Hi Lorri,
ReplyDeleteIt is nice to meet a fellow "older" student ;) I will be 40 this year and I agree, going back to school is one of the best decisions I have made. I have two boys ages 12 and 14 and they get to witness me accomplishing this task which is a wonderful thing. I share two of your areas of study, Behavioral/Social Science and Health Science, my minor is Education. I scored almost the same as you on the Myers-Briggs, I am ENF and a 50/50 split on the J/P. I have to say one of the best inventions ever since I graduated eons ago is Microsoft office with spell check ;). Remember typewriters and whiteout ;).
Welcome to IDS, you will enjoy the experience and congrats on this new chapter in you life.
Katina Bolton
Hi Katina! I was thinking the same thing about older students!! I had one course on campus and got "mame'ed" from my class mates and decided I would avoid campus in the future. As an older student, I have been amazed at how much I appreciate going back to school. It's such a sacrifice financially, time-wise, and to my family that I have given it all I've got and enjoyed every minute!
DeleteGood luck!
Heather Coleman
Hello Katina it is very nice to meet you! I have three children the youngest is 16, the other's are 24 and 30. I decided to go back to school after my husband passed away in 2006. I have always had a keen interest in medical related topics and have always excelled in Medical Terminology and Anatomy and would love to put those two skills to use in my degree program. I am open to all ideas that might help me fine tune my program with what I want to accomplish in my future career. I have a lot of administrative background and am currently working for myself doing online clerical services for a medical case management firm in South Carolina. I would love to do more of that type of stuff so if you know anyone who needs a typist for dictation or letter writing let me know or give them my email and I will gladly send out a copy of my resume.
DeleteTypewriters and white out, ahhhhhhh those were the days. Lol. I remember having an IBM electric typewriter when I was ten. I think it was one of the first electric typewriters ever made. I used that typewriter until it finally died out after years of service. I love having the computer and office software to work with. My fiance uses linux and I do as well and so I am familiar with both Microsoft office, Open Office and Libre Office. I am usually always on the computer for school so working virtually for a company is just another step up for me. I am looking forward to this class and all it has to offer. I can not wait to get some ideas on where to head myself during this new journey!!!
Lorri Cowart
Hello group!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Mahindra Donald Rajkumar. I am 23 years old about to finsih this degree in Fall 2012. I am going to be honest, I chose this degree because I have not found anything that I really want to pursure. Not because I cannot do any of "those" things, but I like everything. I also Like everybody unless you anger me.
Your Type is
ENTP
Extraverted (1%) Intuitive (25) Thinking (1) Perceiving (56)
I do not know if this is true.
Mahindra Donald Rajkumar
Hi Donald! I find it comforting that there is such a wide range of students within our program. There are so many people that have returned to finish school with this program being the reason they knew they could finally do it - myself included. Who knew I would be in a class with one of my little brothers best friends! :)
DeleteMary Cooley
Hey Donald. It does seem like we have a wide variety of ages in this group which is good because we can all give our own perspectives on the subject, (like IDS teaches us!) I am also 23, and finishing up in the Fall. I look forward to blogging with you and hopefully we can as a group find you a direction to start a career in!
DeleteCory Stoekel
More to say on the test. I know I get along with everybosy. I like to meet new people, that is not the problem. The problem is do they like to met me. That is one of my down falls of being social sometime. I also like gadgets and cars. The Giants just one, which I am happy about because I am from New York! But I am a Green Bay! Packers FAN!
ReplyDeleteMahindra Donald Rajkumar
Hello Lorri. I feel like the young-ling in the cornerstone group.Nice to see that you know what you want in life. What advise do you have to figure out what is meaningful. What kind of career is virtual that can promote the ideas you want in life. A Fiance at 50,nice, how long have you been engaged, and when are you going to finally tie knot, (have a time or whenever you finish school?)
ReplyDeleteMahindra Donald Rajkumar
Hi Donald. It took me a lifetime to get to the point where I have gotten thus far in my life. I didnt always know what I wanted but as with anything good in life there are ups and downs and highs and lows. You just have to take stock in yourself, do what feels right in your life, go with your intuitions because sometimes they know more than you realize. A virtual career is something I had never thought about until the last 20 months since I decided my life was going in a different direction what with having a significant other in my life it has changed my perspective on what it is I need and want for myself. In order to fulfill those ambitions and goals I need to arm myself with the tools to be successful no matter where I am. This is the beginning of the rest of my life, I intend to make full use of it!!!
DeleteLorri Cowart
Donald,
ReplyDeleteHello, it is nice to have you in the IDS program. Do not worry about not knowing what you want to do yet, I had the same issue, I wanted to do everything, which is why I will have 167 credits when I graduate in May. I wish I would have found IDS 20 years ago, I could have saved some time and money ;) but it has all been worth it. What are your areas of study? Mine are Health Science, Behavioral/Social Science and Education. I too am happy the Giants won, it was a great game!!!
Good luck and let us know if you have any questions.
Katina Bolton
Donald, I was and still am just like you. It was hard for me to make a choice as far a degre and career went. I loved everything but not enough to ONLY do that! This is why this degre program ws such a good fit for me. Through the classes and experiences I have had in this program I have found out more about myself and what I really love. It's esier to make those decisions when your not under the pressure of "declaring a major". You wil do great in this program. Be open to all experiences and learn as much as possible would be my best advice for you.
ReplyDeleteGood Luck
Nicole Williams
Lori,
ReplyDeleteGood intuition is a gift and I'm glad you have it! It has helped me through many things. I think your idea of working in the virtual field is interesting and a great idea. England is going through many diferent changes and advances in medicine and could be a great place for you to get established with this. I wish I had plans to move to England!! That's awesome! You and I have the same results except in the extravert part, I am an intravert. It is an intersting test I think. Being able to get along with a lot of different types of people is a great skill and is super useful for an extravert. I wish you all the success in the world in this program. I am excited to learn more about you in this blog.
God luck
Nicole Williams
Hello everyone! My name is Heather. My personality type is INFJ. Which means I am quiet and introspective. I prefer a few close friends instead of many casual friends. I like staying in and small groups as opposed to large parties. I am also very intuitive.
DeleteI started my degree at SCC in 1994. But got busy with life and starting a family. After moving around a bit, I ended up in Orthodontics with a very fulfilling career. A few years ago, my doctor told me he was going to retire in 10 years. Rather than planning on going to a different doctor, I thought even I could finish a Masters in 10 years. And so began my journey. I transferred to UCF 1 year ago. Initially it was as a Communication Disorders major, then as an Education major. IDS was my hail mary. Since I work full time and have 2 kids,( 13 & 5) class times were difficult to find. I have completed every course online except one; I found it painful going on campus. Turns out my hail mary was the perfect choice still allowing me to work towards Comm. Dis. without having to quit my job. For me, the advantages were the obvious flexibilty. After a few weeks in this course, this degree gained more credibilty for me. My focuses are Health, Behavioral Science, & Cognitive Science. I can easily be an asset working with students and parents with learning disabilities, Speech or otherwise. The disadvantage to me is the perceived stigma. I always thought this was the degree for those who couldn't make up their mind. Also, it's very difficult to explain. (This course has helped alot there also). Although, I could still pursue a Masters, at this point I am far enough away from my initial focus (which was a very logical step from Orthodontics) so I will finish my bachelor's and see where I end up. If I get a job where I can utilize my studies, that's wonderful. But if I not, I stay in Ortho and die happy knowing I finally finished my degree.
I enjoy shopping, boating, fishing, & history. I spend a shameful amount of time working on my fantasy football team. My inlaws live in St. Augustine so we spend a lot of time there. I have been married to my husband for 14 years. I am also grateful to see other classmates like myself in this blog!
Looking forward to some insightful posts!
Heather Coleman
Hey Heather! Orthodontics was my first career choice but after doing extensive research in PT I decided to switch to that. Thats amazing you decided to go back to get your Masters! It also sounds like you enjoy being on the water either boating or fishing. I Love to be on the water and with growing up in Daytona Beach I was able to do that. I enjoy wakeboarding, surfing, jetskiing and fishing. Best of luck in your future and I am excited to blog with you later on.
DeleteHi Nicole.
DeleteI used to work at Hollywood Video in Winter Park. I met a lot of different people from many different places and being able to adapt is important when you work with all kinds of people. I liked working there though, it was a fun job and I got to watch lots of movies. In fact I rented over 5000 movies in my five years working there.
But not only did i get to watch movies but I learned a lot by working as an assistant store manager with my store manager who actually ended up becoming one of my best friends for life. He taught me so much. I really feel my time there helped make me a better people person than I ever had been before.
But I love school for the same reasons. It has so much to teach me and I really feel my time here will be put to good use and that I can only benefit by what I will learn here at school.
I hope that I can get a better understanding of what it is I would like to do and what direction I want to go in. Moving to England and working virtually are very important to me so I want to make sure I can accomplish both goals. England is a great place and they are making some important medical research happen. I saw a program on how they were developing organs in the lab by using a layer of cells or something like that, very high tech stuff.
I look forward to learning so much in this class. I can not wait to see what we all have to offer.
Lorri Cowart
Hi Heather,
ReplyDeleteWelcome to IDS. We appear to have a great deal in common. I love fishing and boating, although since my hubby broke his back two years ago we have not taken our boat out much. I have two boys ages 14 and 12, who are both bigger than me now, how does that happen so fast? I also do the Fantasy Football thing, I usually have about 3 teams going plus I manage my kids teams and my husband's. I am finally finishing my degree, 22 years after high school. Taking care of a family sure can keep us busy and boy does the time fly.
Good luck on your journey and ask if you need anything,
Katina Bolton
Christie-
ReplyDeleteIt's great that you volunteer for your church youth group! I send my daughter to a summer camp in North Carolina for a few weeks that is church based and she loves it! She also goes to Southwind a few times a year with our church. I really appreciate the positive influence the volunteers provide!
I appreciated your response to "what can you do with that". I hear that also. "So what will you be when you graduate" is one I get too. Good Luck! Can't wait to be on the flip side of this blog.
Heather Coleman
Claudia-
ReplyDeleteCongrats on almost being finished! I can't wait until it's my turn... but I must say, I can't imagine what in the world I will do with all that extra time I will have. What do non students do during the evening anyways??
I took my first sociology course this semester and read the textbook like it's a novel. What a fascinating field!! I look forward to fulfilling the rest of soc. "requirements".
Good luck to you!!

ReplyDeleteHello! My name is Mary and my personality type is ENFJ. Reading about this personality type reiterated what I already knew about myself. I am very aware and sensitive to other peoples feelings. Until recently I thought most people could pick up on this but as it turns out, many people do not. I was excited to review the career indicator results and to see that the things I am most interested in were listed. It makes sense, but to see that it fits my personality type is encouraging.
ReplyDeleteI returned to school last semester after a "break" to figure out what to get a degree in. Since my break began I have had two kids, been married, and divorced. Lots of things have changed in my life, but not knowing what to get a degree in remained. I always felt that I couldn't commit to one area of study and my interests were too broad. I was literally ecstatic when I learned of the IDS program and even more so that I could complete it completely online. I work full time and as stated have children, so being able to complete school on my time frame is a gift. I am majoring in Behavioral and Social Sciences and Humanities and minoring in Women's Studies. I hope to continue to be motivated and excited about school.
Mary Cooley
Hello Heather,
DeleteThank you for the encouragement. It's funny because just last night I mentioned to my husband that I am sad I will be graduating. He thought I was crazy! I am sad because I love learning and studying. I am thrilled I am graduating. It has been a worthwhile challenge that I had doubts I would be able to complete but here I am almost graduating. It has been a blessing to me to have had this opportunity to finish. My biggest motivator has been my 5 children. I wanted to set a positive example about school. Especially that you are never too old to go back to school and gain knowledge and experience. I'm 47 and still want to keep learning. Nursing is in the back of my mind for the future. My youngest is 9 so I will wait until I am done with his schooling before I pursue that path. But it's exciting to think about it!I think it is wonderful that you decided to pursue your degree. I look forward to blogging with you. Take care. Claudia.
Hello Mary,
DeleteThe test was enlightening for me also. I guess we each have a sense of who we are and what we are like but when you see it on paper it just gives you more confirmation. I understand what it is like to be so busy with life and children. One of the main reasons I was able to go back to school was because I could do it from home on my time schedule. It's usually late at night when everyone is asleep. Thank God for computers! I believe your Cornerstone course will help in putting things into perspective and give you an organized way of pursuing your studies. The beauty of IDS is that it is a work in process and as you take your courses you will find out if you like your areas and want to continue in them or if you need to adjust your "outline". It's wonderful to learn! My kids think I am crazy when I say I love school. But now all of them talk about going to college which was not a fact before I started in 2008. Good luck and I am here to encourage you!
Take care,
Claudia
Hello Lorri,
DeleteYou are an encourgement to me! I know how it is to look at your life and want to know that you've done everything you could with the potential that you have been blessed with. When I started in 2008 I was afraid I was too old to go back to school but I also knew I wanted to finish the degree I had not finished in 1986. So I took the challenge and began my academic career. I feel it has been the best decision I could have made for myself. As a mom, I often felt that I couldn't take time away from my kids. But I figured out how to make it work. The interesting thing is that my children were not the ones complaining - it was husband! But he finally got used to the schedule of my studying and he has encouraged me alone the way. IDS was the best way for my to complete my degree and I have been so enriched by all I have learned in my courses. My favorite courses have been those in my Sociology minor. Cornerstone will be very helpful in staying on track and focused. Good luck to you and look forward to learning with you.
Take care,
Claudia
Hello Claudia,
DeleteAlready in the few weeks of this course I have gained a whole new perspective on the IDS program. I knew it gave students the ability to cater to their own learning areas, but it is so much more. I have a lot more respect for it now and appreciate what it has to offer. Knowing what it is about gives me a sense of responsibility to honor it and to try look at different discipline perspectives in a way I wouldn't have before. I am excited to see where this leads!
Like you, I too am typically doing course work when the rest of the house is asleep. I have found that having kids and a full time job actually makes my priorities more apparent. When I attended school and was still living at home I was trying to fit socializing in whenever I could and would put off course work. Now that my schedule has more demands than ever, everything has to be planned out. I know I won't necessarily have a chance to return to an assignment so I plan out what I am checking off my list nightly. It has been working well so far.
Take care,
Mary
Hello Donald,
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your honesty. IDS is the best place to be if you are still trying to figure out what you want to do after you graduate. My philosophy has always been to do what makes you "bubble" inside. By this a mean, pursue a career that makes you happy and is your passion. I believe that when we love what we are doing we look forward to doing it each day. Cornerstone will help in putting all your interests and goals in place. Capstone will bring it all together. Good luck in all you do and look forward to blogging with you.
Take care,
Claudia
Hey Everyone! My name is Cory, I am a 23 year old senior. I changed my major a couple times from Biology to Business and then to Health Sciences so I had credits in different majors. With this major I am able to utilize all my credit hours which is great. I am graduating in the Fall and want to jump right into Physical Therapy school as soon as possible. My personality type is ENFJ which means I am Extraverted, Intuitive, Feeling, and judging. I work for a valet company at Point Orlando and really enjoy it. Although I love driving and use to race sprint cars I also have a passion for helping people and seeing positive results from helping them. I currently shadow a PT and also really enjoy that. I look forward to interacting with all of you!

DeleteHey Cory,
DeleteCongratulations on your impending graduation. It sounds like we have similar goals. I have performed many in office therapies for physicians over the years and find it very rewarding. My original hope was to be a doctor, but after being in the field for eight years...it just does not seem worth it any more. I'm hoping we don't face too much opposition to our degree choice during interviews. Although, I have a feeling after this class we will be able to answer any questions they might have.
Steven Bloom
Hey your like me! I am also looking into getting into PT school.
DeleteHi Corey, Congrats on your up coming graduation. It is exciting. I want to get into PT as well but until they offer something in Melbourne I will have to wait.I will stick to personal training for now. I love racing as well. I used to drag race out at Bithlo back in the day (early to mid. 1990's). Welcome to IDS and good luck with all you do.

ReplyDeleteMy name is Steven Bloom, I'm 26 and the proud father of a 6 year old son and a 6 week old daughter. I am an INFJ personality type. I am much more comfortable in smaller groups, but rise to the occasion as needed. My original goal out of high school was to be a physician. Unfortunately, I am the oldest of four children and had to find a way to put myself through school. Even with all my scholarships, my parents just could not swing my education. I worked at night full time and went to school all day, earning my Basic X-ray license shortly after I turned 18. I have used my license to put myself through school and support a growing family for the last eight years. My wife and I are both IDS majors, and she is the reason I am pursuing this degree. She graduated and was accepted to a BA to BSN program. She will be a nurse in a few months, and will hopefully be able to give me the financial support I need to pursue my dreams. I will finish this fall and plan on applying to physical therapist and physician assistant schools.

Steven,
DeleteWelcome to IDS and congrats on your family. You and your wife sound very motivated. I feel your pain on paying for school. My mom raised us three girls alone so we had to pay our way. That is part of why I am almost 40 and finally finishing my Bachelors. I was an EMT and got accepted to Nursing school and Rad tech at the same time, but life took me to Alabama and things happen. I was told that since I have Neurofibromatosis that I should not be in Radiology due to risk of increased tumor growth. Keep up the good work there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Good luck to you and your wife,
Katina Bolton
Katina,
DeleteThank you. It can get hard sometimes, and that light can get clouded. It is very inspirational to interact with older students, like myself, with families and lives. Sometimes with this degree you can fee isolated from other students, as if you don't belong. Add in being in your mid 20's with kids and its easy to feel like you stick out like a sore thumb.
I hope the Neurofirbromatosis hasn't slowed any other parts of your life. And you are obviously much safer. Especially since most of the equipment I've ever worked with in the field is older then I am, and probably not as safe as it should be.
Good luck to you as well,
Steven Bloom
My test showed: Your Type is ESTJ
ReplyDeleteI am:
slightly expressed extravert
slightly expressed sensing personality
slightly expressed thinking personality
slightly expressed judging personality
I don't know what to think of it.
Hi my names Tanveer. I like to go out on my boat, go fishing, but this semester has been tough with 5 classes. I don't really know why we have to take this class and why it is a requirement for this major. I feel so overwhelmed because my counselor told me this class would be a breeze, but it is one of my hardest class. I know a lot of you are hipped about doing all this posts and blogs, but honestly it just cuts into my studying time for my other classes. I am not attacking anyone, I am just expressing my feeling, so please no one get offended. After all, this is a blog.
Anyway, I just want to get through this semester and not hurt my GPA.

DeleteHey Tanveer,
DeleteHonestly, I kinda felt the same way too when I heard we were going to be blogging along with the other assignments. I think as time goes on though and we get past learning how to work all of this itll be easier. Just got to get into the habit of things. This class is pretty time consuming for an online class, but I'm hoping by the end of it I'll come out with some skills that I didn't have before or something to that effect. A lot of the capstone students are saying that this mentoring project was helpful, so if you ask me that's pretty good news. I hope they are right! Best of luck to you in the class.
Hi Tanveer,
DeleteI don't have five classes this semester but I do agree that this class is much more time consuming than I originally imagined it to be. I was considering dropping this class but my friend convinced me to stick it out. I rearranged somethings in my schedule to accommodate the extra time this class will require. I ,like Matthew, believe by the end of this class that we will benefit from all the different activities.
Tanya Robinson
Tanveer,
DeleteI forgot to ask, what kind of boat do you have? We have a 21' Sea Boss center console. We love to fish, but have not had the opportunity to do any lately. My husband broke his back 2 years ago and has had two surgeries, we are looking forward to getting back out on the water though.
Katina Bolton
Tanveer,
DeleteI completely feel your pain, I am taking a lot of other classes for prerecs since I am switching my current path. I was told it wouldn’t be as tough but I guess that is how it goes sometimes, I myself almost dropped this course. For one I tried to take in-class but due to a hold I had to register late, I’m just happy Mrs, J let me in, lol. I also own a boat and this is shrimping season but with my course load I have only got to go once, at least this isn’t a summer class.

Steven,
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you. I too am an INFJ. I always prefer smaller groups to big crowds. I am a Saturday night stay at home kind of person. You sound like oyu have yourself a busy life with family, school and work. I understand how this feels. I have been working full time and going to school full time as well. It can get tiring but being so close to the end makes me grateful that I have pulled through it and not quite. You will get there. Congrats to your wife too!!
Best of luck to you,
Nicole Williams
Thank you, and yes were are both very exhausted but blessed. It has been a struggle, but the light at the end of the tunnel has kept me going and it's only getting brighter. I think my lifestyle has contributed to my personality. It's hard to explain to people that I am just too busy to have a life outside of my wife and kids, school and work. Although I have always preferred a small group of friends to going to a club or such.
DeleteHey everyone, my names Matthew and I'm 21 years old. I am an INTJ. Slightly expressed in everything. I enjoy water sports (scuba, swimming, you name it) and playing guitar. I am currently in my third year here at UCF. My personality type was somewhat interesting to me, I've taken one of these personality tests in High school for a class and it was interesting to see that I changed from an INFJ to a INTJ. Must be from all the thinking I've been doing in college! I like working in smaller groups, and I enjoy science classes and learning about how things work. I am currently in school to become a pharmacist and am currently studying for my PCAT that I will take over the summer. I hope to do well.
ReplyDeleteCheers, Matthew Vickers
Hey Matthew!
DeleteYour post caught my eye because I saw the words pharmacist and sciences! Call me a geek I know! :)
But I enjoy science classes too, I want to go to school to become an orthodontist so I'm sure we are taking a lot of the same courses! I hope you do well on your PCAT, us dental students take the DAT and they are not easy tests I'm sure you know! I wish you the very best of luck!
Charlotte Haught
Hello Matthew,
DeleteMy personality type has also changed during my college years. I have taken a ton of these types of tests to figure out a path for me to take. Last semester I took a similar test and my type was also INTJ but when I just took it changed to ENTJ. Strange I guess it just depends on the type of test along with the different types of questions. I myself am a certified scuba diver, I became one as a teenage and was a jr. diver but that was so long ago. Good luck with your studying for the PCAT.
Adam Kelley
Hi there!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Charlotte, I'm 21 and an aspiring orthodontist! Yes, that means I love to smile, I love others' smiles, I love making people smile, and I want to fix smiles and make them beautiful! :D
My IDS areas are Physical Sciences, Life/Biomedical Sciences and a minor in Leadership Studies.
My personality type is ENFJ
I found this very true of myself! I am definitely an extrovert in that I tend to talk loud, stand close, and interacting with people is like an energizer for me. I am also very intuitive where I am always asking "What if?" and tend to focus on meanings and relationships rather than facts and details.
I like UCF, but I love my hometown so much more and I wish I could go back or just move UCF there! I am from Stuart, FL and its minutes from beaches and sandbars and I love to go boating and offshore fishing! Also, my favorite pride and joy is there, my golden retriever Owen and I miss him so much!
Its my junior year at UCF and I am extremely looking forward to graduating and going on to dental school.
Just a little summary of me!
-Charlotte Haught-
Hi Charlotte,
DeleteSo glad to see another person from the Treasure Coast. I am from Port St. Lucie, but I worked at a walk in clinic in Regency Square next to the TooJays for a few years. However, I have fallen in love with Orlando and, if not for my mother, would probably never venture back. This is skewed a bit though as I was born in New York and only spent my teen years there.
I wish you all the best in your studies and goals.
Steven Bloom
Hi Charlotte,
DeleteI am not from Stuart but I do miss the beaches. I was born in Bermuda and no matter where you are on the island, the beach is really close.
I too like to smile. When things get difficult as they often do in life, smiling warms me up and reminds me that life is going to get better.
So Charlotte I say success is before you. Keep pressing forward. Remember to keep smiling :-D

Hey Cory,
ReplyDeleteWelcome to IDS! Just like you, I switched my major around a couple of different times before I discovered IDS. I started out wanting to do Physical Therapy and then switched to Education and then I ended up here. Luckily I had enough credits to turn them into minors so I just went along a turned my third area into a minor as well. That’s awesome that you want to do Physical Therapy. I interned for three years with a Physical Therapist and I loved it. I wish you the best of luck!
Megan Sebastian
Greetings all. My name is Tanya Robinson. I am very new to IDS. My disciplines include computer technology, health services and a minor in psychology. i am a single mother with three wonderful children. They keep me young and make me old at the same time, but what would my life be without them. I don't even want to know.
ReplyDeleteI took the assessment and my result was ISTJ.
I would say it was a pretty accurate assessment. I prefer to be alone but I can function fairly well in social situations. I am a great thinker always seeking a new way of completing a familiar task. The only part that I didn't agree with was my Judgmental percentage, 52%.
Hi Tanveer,
ReplyDeleteI know that it seems like a great deal of work, and it is, but it will lessen. Just stick with it, I know 5 classes is a lot, I have four right now and my family never sees me, except for the back of my head on the computer ;). I can assure you that the work load for Cornerstone gets less as the class progresses. You will get the hang of the blogs and it will all be over before you know it. The best thing I got out of Cornerstone was interacting with students like myself who were not is just one discipline and I gained alot of knowledge on how to put together a winning resume and portfolio as well s how to sell myself and get the perfect job. Do not hesitate to ask for help, that is what we mentors are here for. If you have any questions or need anything let us know. ;)
Good luck and it is great to have you in our group.

ReplyDeleteHello to all in The Fantastic 3, my name is Adam Kelley, I was born and raised in Brevard County so of course I love everything that deals with the water. This is my first year at UCF, I took a small break after I got my A.A. which took me close to four years to get due to working, paying for college and some life curve balls. I found the IDS program out through my advisor and so far I like the concept of what it entails, since I did not want to limit myself to just one area. I have taken many personalities test to try and narrow and help me out with some direction, I took lots of them while taking last semester off. This test said I was an ENTJ (extraversion 33%, intuitive 12%, thinking 12%, judgment 67%) I fell under the rational group as a fieldmarshal, it was interesting to see that Napolean Bonaparte and Hillary Clinton was also a ENTJ. I own my own landscaping and lawn service business so I take most of my classes at night, rarely do I do online classes because I seem to do better in class but I took a chance here. This pretty much sums me up, looking forward to talking with everyone throughout the coming weeks.

Adam,
DeleteIt is nice to meet you, I too grew up in Brevard, Merritt Island to be exact. I live in Melbourne now. I love the water and fishing on our boat I tried living in Alabama after my first son was born 15 years ago. I did not like being land locked. We moved back after 6 months. I need to be near the ocean.
My husband used to work for Middleton Pest control, he was a lawn tech. He broke his back two years ago and was fired, they sold out to Massey a few months later, so things work the way they are supposed to I guess. It is a good business to be in especially in Florida.
What are your areas of study? Mine are Health Science, Behavioral/Social Science and Education.
I look forward to working with you and welcome to IDS,
Katina Bolton
